Rate Benchchemical kinetics, worked

A chemical kinetics workbench

Find the rate law.
Show the work.

Paste the readings from your lab or your problem set. Rate Bench fits the integrated rate laws, the initial-rates table and the Arrhenius plot, then shows every number it used, so you can check each step against your own.

0100200300400500-5-4-3-2t (s)ln [A]
Fig. 1 ln [A] against t for the sample run is the straightest of the three plots (R2 = 1.0000), so the decay is first order: k = 5.00 × 10−3 s−1, t½ = 139 s. Worked out by the order finder from the 6 readings in the sample.

How the order finder decides

Three plots. Only one is a straight line.

Each integrated rate law turns the decay into a straight line on its own axes. Rate Bench draws all three, fits each by least squares and reports the straightest. These are the sample’s plots, drawn now.

What a run gives you

Answers you can check, line by line

Rate Bench is for checking your own working and for seeing why a method works. Every result comes with the numbers behind it.

  1. The data as read. Paste two columns from a spreadsheet or type them; scientific notation like 2.5e-5 or 2.5×10^-5 is understood. Anything it cannot read is listed, never silently dropped.
  2. Every fit, not only the winner. Slopes, intercepts and R2 for all three plots, or the fitted order of every reactant.
  3. The textbook steps. Ratio steps for initial rates, the two-point Arrhenius form, half-life formulas with your numbers put in.
  4. Units on every constant. k comes with its units for the order found, from M−1 s−1 to M−2 min−1.
