What Rate Bench keeps, and for how long
- Runs you do not save
- Computed, shown and then forgotten. Nothing about them is stored.
- Runs you save
- Stored with the form fields you typed, under a random private link. Only a one-way hash of the link is kept, so we cannot find a run for you if the link is lost. Anyone you give the link to can open, change or delete the run.
- How long a saved run lasts
- Until you delete it from its page, or until it has gone 400 days without being opened, when it is deleted automatically.
- Backups
- Deleting a run removes it from the live database at once, but copies can remain in backups for a while. The database is backed up every night and the newest 14 copies are kept, so a deleted run stays in them for up to 14 days. Copies are also taken just before and just after each update of the site’s software: the server keeps the copies from the last 10 updates, and WeldonPC keeps copies of them in its own backup archive. Backups are used only to restore the site after a fault, never to look runs up.
- No accounts, no tracking
- No name, email address or password is asked for. There are no analytics, no advertising and no third-party scripts or fonts.
- Cookies
- Pages with a form set one security cookie, used only to stop forged form posts. It is not used to follow you.
- Server logs and limits
- Like any web server, ours keeps short-lived logs of requests (address, time and page, which for a saved run includes its link). Abuse limits count requests by a salted hash of the address, and those counts are deleted after two days.
- Payments
- Once payments are switched on they will be handled by PayPal; Rate Bench will not see card details.
