Instrument 02
Initial rates
A table of experiments in; the rate law, every order and k out, with the ratio steps.
This is the instrument’s sample run (demo numbers). Change anything and press Run, or start from an empty form.
The first line, “[NO] (M), [O2] (M), rate (M/s)”, was read as column titles and skipped.
Result
rate = k[NO]2[O₂]
- Order in NO
- 2 (fit 2.00)
- Order in O₂
- 1 (fit 1.00)
- Overall order
- 3
- k (mean)
- 25.0 M−2 s−1
The working
Intermediate values are carried to six significant figures; results are rounded to three at the end.
- Order in NO. Experiments 1 and 2: [NO] changes by ×2 and the rate by ×4, so m = log(4) / log(2) = 0.60206 / 0.30103 = 2.00. Experiments 3 and 4: [NO] changes by ×3 and the rate by ×9, so m = log(9) / log(3) = 0.954243 / 0.477121 = 2.00. Least-squares fit over all experiments: 2.000, used as 2.
- Order in O₂. Experiments 1 and 3: [O₂] changes by ×2 and the rate by ×2, so m = log(2) / log(2) = 0.30103 / 0.30103 = 1.00. Least-squares fit over all experiments: 1.000, used as 1.
- k from each experiment = rate / [NO]2[O₂]:
Exp. [NO] (M) [O₂] (M) Rate (M s−1) k 1 0.01 0.01 2.5 × 10−5 25 2 0.02 0.01 1 × 10−4 25 3 0.01 0.02 5 × 10−5 25 4 0.03 0.02 4.5 × 10−4 25 - Mean of the 4 values of k: (25 + 25 + 25 + 25) / 4 = 25.0 M−2 s−1.
